Preservation edition · October 3, 2026 · Geekenstein Editorial

Episode scope and spoilers

The original review covered The Simpsons’ season 24 premiere, ‘Moonshine River.’ This synopsis contains setup and subplot spoilers for that episode. It is not a review of season 24 as a whole or a retrospective rating of the entire series.

What Kate Reilly liked

Reilly found the episode stronger and more heartfelt than she expected from the series at that stage. Bart’s search for Mary Spuckler took the family back to New York, creating opportunities for callbacks to earlier episodes. She felt that the writers made productive use of familiar characters and the accumulated history of the show, rather than relying entirely on disconnected gags.

Performance and the weaker subplot

The review particularly praised Zooey Deschanel’s performance as Mary, distinguishing it from a celebrity simply appearing as herself. Reilly was less persuaded by Marge and Lisa’s attempt to enjoy New York on a budget. She found much of that subplot unfunny, although its Shakespeare-in-the-Park conclusion worked better for her. She also criticized the episode’s blow-up-doll joke involving Moe.

The overall judgment

Her conclusion was positive without claiming that the show had returned to its 1990s peak. Character familiarity and affectionate references made this outing work despite less sharp jokes. She resisted treating every later episode as worthless just because viewers preferred an earlier era. No historical numerical score has been verified for this edition.
