Historical source: Kate Reilly, publication date unverified. This edition contains a newly written, condensed account of the original coverage, with historical opinions attributed to their author. It is not the original article or a new firsthand review.
The premise, with episode spoilers
Reilly reviewed the pilot of CBS’s Hostages. Surgeon Ellen Sanders, played by Toni Collette, was preparing to operate on the president when a group led by Duncan Carlisle took her family hostage and demanded that she kill him during surgery. Reilly found that setup promising as the basis for a conspiracy thriller. The recovered publication date remains unverified.
Why the opening did not persuade her
The reviewer’s central objection was that the pilot failed to make her care about the people caught in its crisis. She considered the acting flat or excessively melodramatic and did not think the potentially tense premise translated into an engaging introduction.
The Sanders family’s distractions
Reilly criticized Brian Sanders’ familiar protective-husband role. She also anticipated that Morgan’s hidden pregnancy and Jake’s trouble over drug dealing would divert attention from the main conflict. Those comments describe her reaction to the pilot’s setup, rather than what later episodes ultimately did with either storyline.
Introducing Carlisle
The reviewer thought the episode worked too hard to establish Dylan McDermott’s Carlisle as a formidable renegade. Details about his hospitalized wife and daughter introduced another side to the character, but did not make him convincing to her in this opening installment.
The preserved scope
The recovered article text contains these criticisms of the pilot; this edition does not invent a separate final score or a judgment on the completed series. Reilly subsequently found some improvement in her review of “Invisible Leash”. Keeping the two assessments separate preserves the change in her response between episodes.
