PAX First Look: Duels 2014 Expansion

Preservation edition · October 3, 2026 · Geekenstein Editorial

Historical source: Jake Petersen; September 12, 2013. This is a newly written, condensed account of the retained coverage, with original opinions attributed to their writer. It is not a full-text reproduction or a new firsthand review.

The historical coverage

The PAX expansion preview focused on what Petersen had actually been shown. He described Sword of the Samurai in more detail than the other decks, including its red-white creature plan and equipment subtheme. The preview also discussed new challenges and campaign material connecting to Elspeth’s story.

At the time of the demonstration, the writer had not examined every final deck in the same depth. That limit is part of the article’s meaning. The later expansion review should not be retroactively presented as if it were knowledge available during this preview.

Read this coverage as an early view of how the expansion would broaden the game’s fixed deck choices. The completed expansion’s five-deck comparison appears in the linked retrospective. We retain the original preview’s event context instead of claiming new firsthand access to the demonstration.

A present-day reading note

The following is new editorial analysis, separate from the historical writer’s words and play report.

The expansion review discussed five new decks and ten challenges. The decks explored equipment, counter-and-burn play, Demons, exalted creatures and Elves. Petersen preferred the tempo decisions of Dodge and Burn and criticised the mana consistency of Hall of Champions; those are his dated judgements.
